Count Your Trials Joy

It Is Well…
"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience."James 1:2-3
If there was ever a person who exemplified the right attitude during a time of trial, it was Horatio G. Spafford. Once a wealthy businessman, he was brought to financial ruination by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and shortly thereafter crushed by the news that all four of his daughters had died while crossing the Atlantic. Knowing that, it is astounding that he penned these words:
"When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul."
*Spafford and his wife, who survived the shipwreck, went on to have two more daughters and then founded a group with a mission to serve the poor of Jerusalem.
When we experience trials of any kind, it can be tempting to get angry, demand justice, and act irrationally, crying out, "It's not fair!" But if we can catch a glimpse of Jesus' face as He unfairly hung on the cross, perhaps we will recall how He responded during the greatest trial of all time and try to follow His example.
"You cannot tailor-make the situations in life, but you can tailor-make the attitudes to fit those situations."Zig Ziglar

A Wealth of Information

Since driving conditions are a bit poor tonight and probably will also be tomorrow - here is a daily dose of wisdom.
Wonder how many people know about this...
A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. A resident of Kilgore, Texas she was traveling between Gladewater & Kilgore. It was raining, though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the highway patrolman what had happened he told her something that every driver should know -
NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON.
She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain. But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that was exactly what had occurred. The patrolman said this warning should be listed on the driver's seat sun-visor -
NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY
along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed - but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry. The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries. If you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about this, then it was all worth it. You might have saved a life. NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.

My Favoritest Christmas Carols

Later on we'll perspire as we dream by the fire.
We three kings of porridge and tar.
He's makin a list, chicken and rice.
Noel. Noel. Barney's the king of Israel.
With the jelly toast proclaim.
Frosty the Snowman is a ferret elf, I say.
Sleep in heavenly peas.
You'll go down in listerine.
Oh, what fun it is to ride with one horse, soap and hay.
Oh, come, froggy faithful.

Broker Faces

In light of the fact that
  • I work at a state agency that regulates the securities industry
  • The sad fact that our 401k's are tanking
  • And that we are in a recession

I found this blog rather humorous.

Why instressful times does it feel better to rub your face?

I'm just weird like that.

What A Guy!

Anybody round these parts know Tim Bir? If you've had a kid at Sylvan Hills over the last 6 or so years...then you know him.
Bir (as is affectionately called) has 4 boys. I won't even attempt to describe the entire family. He has a wife named Rebecca. She is a sweet angel.
If you know Tim and his 4 boys then you know she is an angel.
I'm not sure when the tradition started but every year he....ummm.....well let's just say he decorates. The oldest Bir son works for Channel 4.
(thanks Kim for the link)
The Griswold's they're not - but I'd say they're close enough....wouldn't you?
We'll be by to visit you soon, Timmy!
And , oh yeah...that is his real beard!

Mayo and Coffee

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front
of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and
empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then
asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the
jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar
was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house
and your car. The sand is everything else---t he small stuff. 'If you put the sand into
the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the
things that are important to you. 'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the
things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.' One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.

Petit Jean Mountain - Part 1

The Saturday after Thanksgiving we ALL headed up to Petit Jean Mountain for the day. Just a little road trip. Of course I have a million pictures and in the next few moments will bore you to death. So humor me. This is an overlook looking over the water fall.
This is my niece Lindsey...love this girl! Lane and Linds.
Not so sure that Lane was real pumped about going....but he went and I'm glad.
Lindsey and her Nanna.
It was pretty chilly.
Why must they push everything?
There are guard rails for reasons! Kyle
Back up the trail with Chase Nana and Taylor.
Check out Chase and his sagging.
Nice! It was somewhat chilly and very overcast and drizzly. This is part of the waterfall. Not sure if you can see in the top middle of the screen but there's a platform over there with a person standing on it. We'll be there shortly.
Kyle carved his name in a railing.
Lots of cliffs...I mean it IS a mountain! Mather Lodge.
We stopped here for some good hot chocolate in the restaurant.

Lindsey said she always wanted to have a picture in a tree.
Eagle Eye

Carson and Kyle looking for caves.
Someone please pull Carson AWAY from the edge of the cliff!
I have no idea!
I was totally wishing this was our cabin.
Mmmmm....scrum-dilly-umptious!
A loving moment.

Ooops.
Sorry Carson!

Wow.
Crow's feet!
Inside the Lodge by the fire.

Look.....there she is...Aunt Lisa!

Carson
Kyle

Kyle

Nana and all most of her grandchildren.
All but Kody.

How cool is that tree?
The waterfall from a different angle.
Here is the platform that we were at earlier.
Those little dots down there...that's people.
And we were so there!
Lindsey on turtle rock.
Can you see why it was named that way?

Death by boring family pictures....phase I
